Hey there !
Here's an amped up version of Great Lakes Blues, one of our most popular play-a-longs.
I start out nice & easy here, sticking to the tune as it is notated in the play-a-long.
Then I gradually open up, and introduce more improvised ideas, until the last verse where I really break out and let go.
It's an example of a Chicago style blues harmonica. The playing is restrained, and thematic.
Other great examples of this thematic (riff based) style of playing are Hoochie Coochie Man and Manish Boy by Muddy Waters.
Technical notes
This recording is in the key of G. I'm using my Hohner Special 20 in the key of C, using the second position blues scale, as taught in Step #9 of my Step-by-Step Harmonica Course.
The microphone is my custom Dyna-Mic, and I'm playing it through a Fender Super Reverb on a very low volume, the bluesy distortion is coming from the pre-amp built into the Dyna-mic itself. But more on that topic soon, as I talk about mics, and amped up playing this month...

Wow that lights me up!??? that sounds awesome…Thanks for the inspiration… and Ryan I second your “Fire” comment!
Fire!
Your recording is really inspiring!
Been practicing Great Lakes Blues this week.
Hope to record soon even the setup is still unclear to me (phone for video, mac for audio or…?). I’ll send you the recordings once completed.
As Henk wrote in the forum: Please share your experience playing amplified. Any tips and tricks are welcome.
Hey Udo,
Yes. Phone for video, and mac for audio is best for the collaboration. That way I can sync a better audio sound in with my recording, and your video. ?
Very nice Mitch, smooth as. I could listen to that all day.
Cheers
Cool playing Mitch, you are showing us what the possibilities are using the 2nd position blues scale.
The Dyna-mic is really a good mic and gives it an extra vibe ???
