Ear Training

Ear training is one of the keys to becoming a better harmonica player. These call-and-response exercises help you recognize what you hear, find it on the harmonica and build the muscle memory to play it back.

Check out the introduction video, then start with P#1 below — it's free.

Beginner Exercises

These Ear Training pages are organized by position and tempo. The beginners section starts with some easy exercises in 1st position at 70 beats per minute (bpm), then progresses up to 2nd position licks at 90 bpm.

Ear Training P#1

A set of beginner ear training licks — slow 1st position call-and-response exercises at 70 bpm to start training your ear from day one.

Ear Training P#5

The tempo ticks up to 80 bpm in this members-only set — same 2nd position licks, a little more speed to keep your ear and reflexes sharp.

Ear Training P#6

The final beginner set at 90 bpm, exclusive to members — work through these and you're ready for the intermediate ear training section.

Intermediate Exercises

These ear training licks use techniques that are taught in the intermediate section of our diatonic step-by-step course.
