Hey all
So I’ve been trying to dig deeper into some of my favorite harp songs and have been having a blast transcribing some of these, that it ended up turning into a larger project transcribing the whole band, or my best attempts to do so… which in turn, provides a MIDI backing track to play along to. Nothing was mixed; the final audio is the mp3 generated from MuseScore’s synthesizer and the notes are hand-picked through MuseScore’s interface.
My latest obsession is “Ready, Steady, Stroll!” from Mark Hummel’s Harpbreaker. That 2″-draw yaw-yaw right after coming from a 3’/3″ is way too fun and addicting, yet subtly difficult. And I had to try to dig into them tasty keys too with Chris Burns, along with the shuffle from Rusty Zinn’s guitar, RW Grigsby’s bass, and Willie Panker’s drums.
Please leave a post if you feel inclined. I’m happy to read your comments.
Backing Track:
Grab an A diatonic to play along.
Hope you enjoy, fellow harpers!Wait… is that you playing?! This sounds amazing! I know you already explained this all but I don’t think I comprehended it fully… did you create these music pages?
And this is great because not too long ago I watched a documentary that Mark Hummel was in and I had never heard of him before. Then Jonathan just shared his meeting with him and this is the universes third nudge… I’m listening now!
Thanks for this Ryan… This was super enjoyable… and thanks I will grab my A harp:DHey Shawn! Hey, glad you like it. You might be interested in Mark Hummel’s Harmonica Party (check it out on youtube). He does interviews for both past and current blues musicians.
Nah that’s not me playing. I listened to the song very slowly, and did my best to transcribe what I heard. There was a lot I knew I was missing, so this helped me pin-point what I think I’m hearing. I wish I could play it up to speed in certain parts. At the moment, the synthesizer is better at playing these notes in a row than I am xD but that’s where the backing track comes in handy.
Here’s a clip of today’s efforts: https://soundcloud.com/swingin-on-the-spiral/ready-steady-stroll-segment
Wow, I know what it takes to do that Rooftop! Hours and hours of work there! Good effort on the shuffle too, that’s not easy.
Do you have logic? You could bring in the midi and mix in there. Just an idea!
Hey Rooftop, thanks for your reply and further explanation… First of all now that I have a better understanding of what you did… I agree with Mitch… That is quite the project And super impressive! And then there is the undertaking of playing “ Ready steady stroll”…I actually just listened to Mark Hummel play it and man is that a cool song! Also I’m so glad you shared yourself playing this.. you’re sounding really good! Your vibrato and head wabble are sounding great and I love the tone you are getting… I was really impressed.
And thanks for the heads up on mark’s YouTube show… I am looking forward to checking that out! Good luck on the “ready steady stroll” Journey… I’m excited to hear more if you ever feel to share.Hey Mitch! Thanks!! I’m all ’bout that swing :) It was really exciting getting all the parts together. It took a while for sure, but the playback is rewarding for the reassurance and as an aid to really dig further into the song. I haven’t heard of Logic before, but I’ve been using GarageBand. Cheers
Shawn, thanks! I appreciate your comments about my playing :) Yeahh I’m super hooked on this song lol. So much gold in it. I’m glad you think it’s cool too! I uploaded another song on youtube today if you want to hear another. Cheers
Thats awesome…thanks Rooftop, I’ll check it out
Wow, this looks like a lot of dedication, top effort dude. Had a quick listen but this evening the house is quiet so I’ll re play it. I need to get some direction in my playing and get back to some learning.
Thanks, Jonathan. To my best current effort, I transcribed this and few other songs too on that same channel the past couple months for fun.
“Ready, Steady, Stroll!” is 2nd position, but there’s some 3rd and a 4th position on there too.
If anyone is more interested in all this and wants these transcribed into another key to play along with, like if you don’t have the correct key harp, I don’t mind, as it only takes a few seconds to transpose and export to mp3.
Enjoy and have a great weekend! -
