Harmonica Lessons › Community Forum › Harmonica Q&A › Loving being confused about keys!!
I’ve been on hols(vacation) for a week but back in the groove now. As I’ve said before I was really conscious about uploading audio but thanks to you guys out there I overcame that feeling and now I’m happy to upload YouTube to this forum, if your reading this and haven’t already uploaded please give it a go. I seem to have turned a corner with playing, I’ve not jumped to being awesome! I simply don’t care if it goes a bit wrong, or if it’s not perfect, what’s the worst that can happen?
So, I was asked to join a group of ukulele players that have just started near me and I’ve been practicing with them for a couple of weeks and its so much fun and its giving me a real buzz. Skipping notes or going slightly wrong is just nothing to stress about. We’ve got a set and I’ve been adding the tracks to my music library and watching YouTube vids. I understand the concept of different keys and there’s so much out there on the web but I’ve now had another light bulb moment. I have realised that I may know the key of the original track and can play along to it but the ukes are playing different keys to the original, so I pick up a harp in that key and play the tab I’ve uploaded but now I’ve realised that the tab can be written for playing in 1st, 2nd. etc position and my little brain is in overload. From Mitch”s steps I understood the concepts but now I’m trying to apply that to playing with this group. Good news is that my son has a great ear so I drag him along with his acoustic guitar and he instantly tells me which harp is correct for the ukuleles through trial and error! I’m hoping that in time my understanding of the harp theory combined with more experience will help me overcome this issue. I don’t think there’s a quick fix I just thought I’d share my rambling thoughts with y’all! AND Ive found out that border control guys are intrigued with harmonicas in luggage, I actually played 3 times in the main customs area of the airport for 3 separate officers and 2 of them wanted a harp from me!
