Hey Harmonics lovers!
Ok… you know those short little Segway licks that Mitch does between sections of the videos in the 30 step series… they come in usually after he says “ let’s get into it” and they are the sweetest freakin’ licks! Mitch I’m guessing you added those in to keep it interesting and entice us… and if you do… IT WORKED! I would hear those pieces and find myself laughing out loud with excitement cause they were so damn good!
Anyways continuing to knock off things on my bucket list of awesome things to play on a harmonica… here are three of those “let’s get into it” licks.
Hope you Enjoy!Shawn,
Enjoy?! You blew me away with this. Wow! That brought me straight back to Mitch’s 30 steps. Love this! Nice, smooth transitions. And played up to speed. A cute melody and then that toot chord at the end of the first lick gave me a chuckle. I remember Mitch would do that sometimes and give us all a chuckle too.
Keep up the great work! It sure did work!
Well that is quite the reflection… thanks so much for this Ryan! And so Glad That could produce a chuckle!
More than a chuckle, OMG!! I hope you didn’t take that the wrong way. Ig it just the Ta-Ta’s that make me chuckle lol. Ok wait…dangit. Pun UNintended. Jeez… go away, misleading humor cloud!
Shawn, this is amazing progress imho. To be able to link a melody like that from hole to hole takes a lot of practice and time many don’t appreciate… and I’m not just talking about the woodshed sweats for a single hole. You’ve chained together melodies with fluidity from hole to hole with bends, and that’s just the start. You make them sound fun, interesting, and most importantly, musical, and quite clean to boot! That split glissando from 3 to (3,6), to a perfectly light touch of the (2,5) draw. And then that dirty (3′,4′) OOH YEAHH, and then to hit the clean 2-draw from there takes a lot of skill. And the tremolo on the clean and full (1,2,3) chord – NICE! And finally seal it off with a Ta-Ta chug, hehe – and all of this up to that speed! I say: Bravo!! And that was just the first lick you did. And wasn’t it only just a couple months ago that you started playing around more with vibrato? Sounds like you’re getting a handle on that too. That’s that good good stuff right there!
These licks brought me straight back to Mitch’s lessons. They kept me motivated too when I was struggling hardcore. I’m glad you shared your take on them, because imo you sound very similar if not exactly on point, and it was cool hearing them from your voice. Hope to hear more from you soon.
Best,
RyanHey Ryan thanks so much for your sincerity… but I didn’t take it that way at all. You’re responses to people are always filled with sincere kindness and helpfulness… and usually some bit humor that makes me crack up! And how could that ending little “ ta ta” not make someone chuckle or at least smile… it is probably one of the happiest little things you could play on a harmonica!
And your ability to articulate music theory and understand it is impressive… I aspire! It is totally a foreign language to me still… one that I continuously work on learning. And Thanks again for the reflection … I’ve been up against such intense blockages lately so it helps me to keep playing through. Happy harpin man!Hi Shawn,
This is awesome, hearing something you like and try to figure out how to play it great job man.
That’s how it’s done ages before we started picking up this wonderful instrument and it’s a good way of practise.
Thanks for sharing.Greetings,
Henk. Thanks for your kind words, Shawn. It’s difficult to express one’s feelings via text messages.
I really wish I understood music theory better too though… and I find it quite difficult to use it in a meaningful manner. You’ll hear ppl say “you gotta just let go” and “let your subconscious do the work”… I feel like it all really just comes down to focus and repetition, and effectively doing both. I’m ok with repetition, but it’s a matter of doing both effectively. I’m ok with repetition, but what was I saying?
Happy chuggin’ & tootin’!
Thanks so much for the response Henk! I love being able to slow things down on this site and pick them apart. I haven’t gotten to the point where I can do it while listening to a piece in real time… that’s my next goal! Take care Henk

Wow dude… this literally had me laughing out loud! I was having a super challenging day and never imagined laughing out loud… that totally caught me off guard… thanks for this Ryan! -
