James ‘Mr. Superharp’ Cotton (July 1, 1935 – March 16, 2017), born in Tunica, Mississippi.

James became interested in music after hearing Sonny Boy Williamson II on the radio, who later mentored James after he moved to Arkansas.

Cotton played with Howlin’ Wolf in the early 1950s, Muddy Waters starting 1955, and numerous other prominent artists. Eventually he started his own band, the Jimmy Cotton Blues Quartet, in 1965, and the James Cotton Blues Band in 1967.

    Got My Mojo Workin’
Those glissandos straight into the 4-draw bend, and back. No one does it better!

    Off The Wall
Compared to Little Walter, I personally like his crunch on the 2 3″ 3′, those clashy (4,5) draws, the perfectly timed cupping/uncupping on the 5 bend, and that ending, bouncing between the (3+,6+) tonic and 3-hole draw bleeds.

    Honest I Do
Such soulful high end playing, and from what I’ve heard, most of what he played near the end of his life, as he was battling throat cancer.
