Hey all! Here is a little improv that came after I was done practicing the other day. Ive been having a rough time around the holidays this year but thanks to the healing power of music, I had a rockin session on the harmonica today and felt a world better!
Hoping all your holidays are happy and if they’re not here’s to playing some blues or whatever lights you up to make em a little better!Nice one Shawn!! That’s a great improv and the timing is spot on too. Glad you can share and enjoy some harp with us, through it all.
Really nice. 🙂
Great phrasing, Shawn, and best wishes! Happy holidays, everyone!
Thanks so much for these responses! Mitch thanks for the reflection about the timing… that’s a victory for me because I’ve been really working on that aspect… it hasn’t been my strong suit in the past and thanks for the reflection on the phrasing Ryan… ya I had fun with those and tying them together.
Happy New Year to you all!Hi Shawn,
I am glad you shared this because I was hoping to listen to a sample from the group. I searched the Forum but did not find any for the Step 4 exercise; may be they are there, just hidden somewhere.
Your play was smoothly done for a minute and a half and came out with varieties throughout, surrounding your selected basic notes. My attempt with improv was too boring to share, now you have given me an idea. Still, I am not sure I can handle this duration. So it can sound different every time, as it is an improv, right, unless I write it down? But then, it will not be called an improv, hmmm…
Happy New Year!
Thanks so much CC.. and I think I am the last person to comment on what constitutes an improv or not technically speaking… but I say whatever helps me to play more fluently than I do that. Like when I came up with this improv… I played something different for a couple days in a row sampling different phases and playing them a little differently each time and then I put something together that I really liked and just played that over again.
And when I first started this course I had absolutely no idea how to improv… it felt like staring into the sun… so I would just play the blues scale to a song that I wanted to improvise to and would just play it over and over until one day something just came out naturally and I just went from there little by little. Even now If am listening to a blues song and don’t know what to play I still play the scales up and down in rhythm to the song… it really has helps me to learn the language better.
I hope that helps! -
