Is it necessary to hold the harmonica with the left hand? I’m 67 and have held it in my right hand since I was 18. Feels weird in my left. I’m not a new player but not good either. Have always played tremolos. And always first position.
Hi Roland,
No, it’s not absolutely necessary to hold the harmonica in your left hand. There have been some excellent players who have held it in their right.
The main advantage of holding it in your left hand, particularly if you’re right-handed, is that it leaves your right hand free to do more of the cupping, muting and hand effects. That’s why I generally teach it that way.
But after playing first position with the harp in your right hand since you were 18, I wouldn’t force yourself to change unless you feel there’s a specific technique you’re struggling to achieve because of it.
Comfort, control and being consistent with the way you hold the instrument are more important.
If it feels natural in your right hand, I’d keep playing that way. 😎
