Hi all. I’ve been harpin for 3 weeks and loving it. Im lucky that I get a fair bit of time to practice and to enjoy the playing meaning I’ve practiced for quite a few hours a day, some days. The online Steps are awesome and I’m now looking at the Play a Longs and the Lick Library to add to the fun. I usually set myself up somewhere quiet, sitting in front of the laptop but I slacked out this evening and just messed around, no screen, no notes just the harp, me stretched out on the sofa in front of the burner to see what noise I could make. I actually made up some fun little sounds on the major scale and realised that now and again I knew where to go and what would sound ok without really thinking about it. It wasn’t so pretty on the blues scale, a bit disjointed but I’ll keep plugging away at it. So, I guess that was improvisation! This was my fist, minor success at making my own noise and I believe it made a difference being relaxed and not trying too hard. Any newbies out there find the same, if not what else do you do to help you along on the journey. Happy to hear your tips and tricks from newbies and old sweats alike!
This sounds awesome, Jonathan! I loved reading the description of your process. I think it’s one of the most magical moments when you’ve been practicing something for a while and you set off to just play and what you have learned comes out naturally even if awkwardly at first… sometimes when it happens I get so excited and stop playing and geek out a bit by myself. Playing music… so magical! Thanks for sharing this
I’m really glad to hear that mate. That’s the perfect follow up to what we talked about in the webinar over the weekend. Just have a crack, and as Henk said, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. From everything you said in the webinar yourself and now seeing this post, my only recommendation for you is to keep doing it!
Others may have some more specific personal breakthrough moments that they may like to share, but just keep throwing in some ‘couch time’ along with the technique practice and you’ll enjoy your playing even more, and more over time.
Nice one! 😎
Thanks both for the replies and encouragement. Shawn I’m like a kid at Christmas at the moment playing when and where I can. I agree 💯 % that the success of finally “getting it right” is a real thrill and it’s still definitely coming together steadily. Also realised that I’ve not spent enough time on each step before progressing to the next so I’ve gone back to the beginning (again) this time I’m only moving on when I’ve nailed it properly. Cheers both🤙
